Join AXIS Dance Company for its 2017 Oakland Home Season ‘Onward & Upward’, running from October 26th-29th at the Malonga Casquelourd Center for the Arts.
AXIS exists to change the face of dance and disability and is one of the world’s most innovative ensembles of dancers with & without disabilities.
AXIS Dance Company celebrates its 30th anniversary with the premiere of ‘Radical Impact’, a commissioned work by newly appointed Artistic Director Marc Brew. Created in collaboration with Composer JooWan Kim, Artistic Director of Oakland-based Hip-Hop Orchestra Ensemble Mik Nawooj, Brew’s work comes alive with Kim’s original score for live string quartet. ‘Radical Impact’ explores what it means to be human through music and movement, investigating themes around identity. The work draws on each dancers unique experiences and how their stories can be told through the medium of dance.
Bay Area choreographer Amy Seiwert pushes AXIS to a new level of rigor with her new work ‘The Reflective Surface’, featuring an original score by Darren Johnston. This work begins with a ballet foundation that is transformed through Seiwerts unique quirkiness, kineticism, and layered partnering.
Finally, the original cast of ‘Secret Ponies’, choreographed by Stephen Petronio in 2001, returns to perform excerpts from this iconic work. Founder & Director Judith Smith returns to the stage alongside fellow dancers Nadia Adame, Alisa Rasera, Nicole Richter, and Bonnie Lewkowicz.
‘Onward & Upward’ features Company Dancers James Bowen, Lani Dickinson, Scotty Hardwig, Carina Ho, Yuko Monden, and Dwayne Scheuneman.
